SMS (Text) Notifications for Users

Patrons can receive SMS (text) notifications for holds, overdue, courtesy, and autorenewal notices.

Enabling SMS Notifications

Patrons can opt-in to SMS notifications during new account registration (via the User Registration wizard) or by modifying an existing account (via the Modify User wizard).

Configuration

  1. Demographics Tab: In the Notify by field, select:
    • SMS: For text notifications only.
    • SMS_EMAIL: For text and email notifications.

  2. Addresses Tab: In the Address 1 SMS field, enter the patron's 10-digit mobile phone number followed by @sms.oplin.org. Do not include hyphens or spaces in the phone number.

The first time the patron receives a message from the library, they will receive the following message:

You are opted in to receive 100 msg/mo of Library text notices. Msg&Data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help. Reply STOP to cancel.

Notice Language

The verbiage for the SMS notices are:

  • Hold: Hello <First name>. You have item(s) to pick up at <pickup library>.
  • Overdue: <First name> has item(s) overdue at <checkout library>.
  • Courtesy: <First name>, you have library items due soon at <checkout library>.
  • Autorenewal: <First name>, you have items that renewed automatically from <checkout library>.

Troubleshooting

As a test to see if their carrier is blocked, the patron can text 'help' to 877-675-4632.  If everything is OK, the patron will receive a message:

Msg&Data rates may apply. Get #msg/mo of Library text notices. 6147285252

If the patron does not receive a message, either the carrier is blocked, or the patron texted STOP to cancel SMS messages. To reenable messages, the patron can text 'unstop' to 877-675-4632.
