SMS (Text) Notifications for Users

Enabling and Managing SMS (Text) Notifications

Patrons can opt-in to receive SMS notifications for holds, overdue items, courtesy reminders, and auto-renewal notices. This can be configured during initial registration or by modifying an existing account.

Configuration Steps

Demographics Tab

  1. Locate the Notify by field.
  2. Select either SMS (for text only) or SMS_EMAIL (for both text and email).
Demographics tab in WorkFlows showing the Notify By dropdown with SMS_EMAIL selected.

Addresses Tab

  1. Locate the Address 1 SMS field (or the field designated for SMS by your library).
  2. Enter the patron's 10-digit mobile number followed by @sms.oplin.org.
Note: Do not include hyphens, spaces, or parentheses.
    Example: 7405551234@sms.oplin.org
Addresses tab showing the 10-digit phone number and OPLIN SMS domain in the SMS address field.
First-Time Opt-In Message:

When the first notice is triggered, the patron will receive this mandatory confirmation: "You are opted in to receive 100 msg/mo of Library text notices. Msg&Data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help. Reply STOP to cancel."

Notice Language

SMS notices are designed to be brief. The following templates are used:

  • Hold: Hello [First name]. You have item(s) to pick up at [pickup library].
  • Overdue: [First name] has item(s) overdue at [checkout library].
  • Courtesy: [First name], you have library items due soon at [checkout library].
  • Auto-renewal: [First name], you have items that renewed automatically from [checkout library].

Troubleshooting

If a patron is not receiving messages, they can perform a connectivity test:

  1. Ask the patron to text the word HELP to 877-675-4632.
  2. If successful: They will receive a response confirming the service and the OPLIN support number.
  3. If unsuccessful: Their carrier may be blocking the shortcode, or they may have previously texted STOP to the service.
Re-enabling Service: If a patron has previously opted out by texting STOP, they must text the word UNSTOP to 877-675-4632 to begin receiving library notices again.
