List of Approved GMDs for Bibliographic Records

Modified on Thu, 14 Nov at 12:17 PM

To make identifying certain material types easier for patrons, the SEO Library Consortium adds General Material Designators (GMDs) to the titles in bibliographic records despite this practice being removed since the adoption of RDA. The GMD is added to the 245 field, subfield h enclosed in square brackets.

Notes

1. Larger print books should not have the large print GMD. They should be attached to the regular print record.

2. In the 300 (Description) field, the CD or DVD should be the extent (subfield a) and the book as the accompany material (subfield e). If the book is in subfield a, then use no GMD.
Examples:
CD/book: 300 |a1 sound disc (15 min.) : |bdigital ; |c4 3/4 in. + |e1 book.
No GMD: 300 |a300 pages : |billustrations + |e1 sound disc

3. If the audiobook is abridged, add (abridged) to the GMD.
Examples:
[book on CD (abridged)], [book on digital player (abridged)]

4. Do not add a separated record for DVD/Blu-Ray combo packs. SEO suggests separating these materials. If they are not separated, use the [DVD] or [BLU-RAY] GMD, whichever works best for your library.

5. The kit GMD is used when a record describes 3 or more formats and none is the main item OR for collections that contain multiple copies of the same item.

Examples:
300 |a7 books, 2 hand puppets, 2 printed sheets, 1 video ;|cin black mesh backpack.
300 |a26 books ;|cin canvas carrying case.
