When a library patron claims that an item still charged out to him/her has been returned to the library, he/she may request that the library place a "Claims Returned" on the item. If your library is the owner of the item, you may put the item in Claims Returned status. If you do NOT own the item, you must contact the owning library and ask for permission to place the item in Claims Returned status. Not every library allows items to be put into Claims Returned status.
- In the Checkout wizard, scan the Users ID.
- In their list of checkouts highlight the item they claim to have returned.
- Right click and choose Claims Returned.
- Use the Claims Returned Gadget to choose the date of the claims returned.
- What date should be entered in the Claims Returned field?
The date entered depends on your library’s policy. Your library can select one of the following dates.- Date item was due.
- Date user claims to have returned the item.
- Date user made the claim.
***If a date is entered on or before the item’s due date, no fines are billed to the user. If a date is entered after the item’s due date, fines are calculated and the days overdue up to and including the claims returned date and are billed to the user.***
- Once the Claims Returned date is entered, click on the Mark Item Claimed Returned button.
***The item the user claims to have returned stays on the User’s record until the item is checked in.
***After a specified time period, you have the option to checkout the item to your Missing User if you do not want the title to remain on the user's account. That time period would be determined by your library's policies.
When a Claims Returned item is returned; staff will need to do the following:
*** The number of claims returned does not decrease automatically on the Users record*** - Bring up the User in the Modify User Wizard.
- Go to the Privilege Tab.
- Use the Claims returned Gadget to subtract 1 and click OK.
- Enter the Override and Click OK to save the changes made.
SEO ILS staff can help with directions to check user records to determine if the claims returned number reflects the correct number of actual claimed return items.
