Claims Returned

When a patron claims that an item still checked out on their account has been returned to the library, he/she may request that the library place a "Claims Returned" on the item. If your library allows items to be put in Claims Returned, follow the steps below.

If your library does NOT own the item, staff must contact the owning library and ask for permission to claim the item returned.

  1. From the CIRC Toolbar, click on the Checkout Wizard.
  2. Scan the user's barcode or use the User Search Helper to search for the user.
  3. In their list of checkouts highlight the item they claim to have returned, right click and choose Claims Returned.
  4. Use the Claims Returned Gadget to choose the date for the claims returned, then click on Mark Items Claimed Returned.
If the claims returned date is entered on or before the item's due date, no fines are billed to the user.

If the claims returned date is entered after the item's due date, fines are calculated for the days overdue, up to and including the claims returned date, and are billed to the user.

A claims returned item stays on the user's record for one year, unless the item is returned within the year.

When an item is claims returned, the Claims Returned Count is advanced one on the user's record. This number does not decrease automatically. Check with your director to see if the counter is to be decreased.

To decrease the number follow the steps below.

  1. From the CIRC Toolbar, click on the Modify User wizard
  2. Scan the user's barcode or use the User Search Helper to search for the user.
  3. Click on the Privilege tab.
  4. Click on the Claims Returned Gadget
  5. Subtract 1 and click OK
  6. Enter the override and then click save.
