What are the Guidelines for a browsing collection DVD and Video Media?

Browsing Collection Policies

Libraries may develop a browsing collection by purchasing additional copies of popular materials. These copies are intended for immediate, on-shelf access and eventually transition into the regular circulating collection once demand decreases.

The 1:1 Requirement: To maintain the integrity of the consortium-wide resource sharing, each library building must own at least one circulating copy of a title for every one browsing copy owned.

Consortium Shared Policy

All libraries utilizing browsing collections are required to use the designated Browsing Item Type (I-Type). This ensures the following shared policy is enforced:

  • Browsing copies are restricted from transit to other libraries (Local use only).
  • One circulating copy must exist for each browsing copy.

Policies Determined at the Local Library

While the I-Type is shared, the following settings are configured by each individual library:

  • Loan Period: Duration the item can be checked out.
  • Fine Rate: Overdue penalties (if applicable).
  • Renewals: Whether the item is renewable.
  • Holds: Whether browsing copies can fill holds for the owning library's local cardholders.
