Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 Games Guidance

Cataloging Guidelines: Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch 2

With the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, it is important to distinguish between original Switch titles and enhanced Switch 2 content in the catalog.

Nintendo Switch (Original)

Titles designed specifically for the original Nintendo Switch should be assigned the following GMD:

  • Visual Indicator: Switch 1 game cartridges are Black.
  • Compatibility Note: Most original Switch games are compatible with the Switch 2 console.

Nintendo Switch 2

Titles designed for the Nintendo Switch 2 should be assigned the following GMD:

  • Visual Indicator: Switch 2 game cartridges are Red.

Dual-Format Cartridges

Some newer titles are released on a single cartridge containing both the standard Switch 1 version and enhanced Switch 2 content. The system automatically detects which version to play based on the hardware used.

Cataloging Rule: If a cartridge is labeled for Switch 2 or the cartridge is Red, catalog it using the GMD: [VIDEO GAME (Nintendo Switch 2)]. This ensures users seeking enhanced content can easily identify these versions.
  • Visual Indicator: Dual-Format cartridges are Red.
