Common Notice Bounce Reasons & Action Required

Weekly, SEO updates patron accounts for e-mail addresses that have been marked as Do Not Contact in Patron Point. Below is a table of common Do Not Contact Reasons as well as the action to take to re-enable the patron to receive e-mail notices.

Patron's convert from soft to hard bounce: quota exceeded: recipientInitially a temporary issue (e.g., full inbox), but escalated to a hard bounce. Hard bounces harm sender reputation and result in a 90-day block.2
recipient: user unknownThe email address does not exist.3
recipient: mailbox inactiveThe email address is abandoned or inactive.3
Incorrectly formatted email addressEmail is missing or improperly formatted.3
domain: typofixThe domain part of the email is invalid or misspelled.4

  • Apply the following actions only if the patron wants to continue receiving notices and if the email address reported as bounced is verified as the correct address.
  • If the email address is different, update the email address and notify by preference, then delete the NOTE.
  • If the patron no longer wants to receive email notifications, delete the NOTE.

Other than the 'domain: typofix', staff should not re-add the patron e-mail address and update Notify By until the ticket has been resolved by library staff. Once the ticket is resolved, the e-mail address and Notify By can be updated. Do not forgot to remove the bounced note.
