Onshelf List Best Practices

Running Lists

In accordance with the Principles of Cooperation, the Onshelf List should be completed at least once a day when the library is open, except on Sundays. Libraries are strongly encouraged to run the Onshelf List more often as time allots.

Missing Items

If staff cannot find an item, it is encouraged that another staff member perform a shelf check. If that is not possible or if the item still cannot be located, the item should be marked as MISSING. By marking the item as MISSING, the request can be filled by another library.

Filling Holds

Under no circumstances should hold requests be withheld or left unfilled due to the item’s age, subject matter, requesting library, or requesting patron.

Worn Materials

If the material is worn (pages falling out, broken DVD case), check the item out to your library’s mending user and repair the item before filling a hold. If the material is worn but does not need mending, fill the hold. The material may need to be discarded if the damage cannot be repaired.
